eBook Ecstasy

The eBook Ecstasy newsletter may go to a bi-monthly format in 2003. There was no December newsletter due to a lack of epublishing news. January and February 2003 ebook releases with four star reviews have been combined in this issue. Also in this issue are articles by Lori Avocato and Dorothy Thompson as well as an interview with Elizabeth Burton, Editor-in-Chief of Zumaya Publications.

eBook Ecstasy is a free monthly newsletter aimed at introducing readers to great ebooks. In upcoming issues, we plan to include information on worthy ebook news. So, epublishers can feel free to send us their press releases about innovations, authors should send notification of book signings, awards or other achievements and readers should provide feedback as to the features you would like to see added to eBook Ecstasy. This is *your* newsletter.

Promote Yourself

Lori Avocato

Recently I decided to try selling my books on the Arts and Crafts circuit.  Great idea being this close to Christmas.  I sold more at the last fair than at any bookstore. And, I learned to promote myself.  The governor of Connecticut, Governor Rowland, came in to the Craft Fair with his entourage to do some last minute politicking.  It was three days before Election Day.

Instead of rushing up to him for a handshake or picture, I snatched up one of the two books that I was selling--my short contemporary romantic comedy, THE PRINCE'S BRIDE.  I quickly signed it and waited until he neared my table.  Then I stepped out from behind my booth and plastered on the friendliest, Republican smile I could muster.  I said, "Excuse me, Governor Rowland.  I am a local author and would like to donate my book to you for your wife."

He graciously took it, looked at the back a minute and said, "This is great.  She loves romances.  This is the kind of book she likes to read." Go Mrs. Rowland!

Now here's where promoting yourself comes into play.  I snagged the promo opportunity and said, "Oh, then you should buy my other book."

He laughed and said, "You're right.  I should." And he did.

After he'd asked me to personally sign both books to his wife (and paid for one of them), he said, "This is great.  You don't know how you've made my day.  Now my wife will think that I thought about her today--and bought her a gift."

I said, "Great.  Feel free to take the credit for the idea.  Oh, that's right.  You should do good at that since you're a politician."

He laughed and said, "Hey, Lor, we wrote the rules on stuff like that."

When he called me "Lor" I felt as if the governor and I were old buddies.  Now my books are in the Connecticut Governor's mansion. And, yes, the main reason I voted for him that following Tuesday was so that I could still say my books were there.  I really would have been bummed if he'd lost. So, seize every opportunity you can to promote yourself and your work.

Author Info:

After serving in the Air Force as a registered nurse, Lori Avocato decided to give up her nursing career to write fiction. She has sold eight contemporary romances and one children's book (children's book under the pen name, Lori Lane).

Lori lives in New England with her husband, her two boys and their little dogs, Kirby and Spanky, Shih Tzu/poodle mixes. She's the past president of the Connecticut Chapter of Romance Writers and has served on the Board of Directors for four years. She is an active member of the Romance Writers of America and attends various conferences throughout the year. Lori has won numerous writing contests throughout her career and teaches fiction writing in several Adult Education programs.

She is also a member of Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America along with several RWA chapters. Lori writes full time with the focus of her work running from humorous contemporary stories, often with medical professional characters, to military romances. She currently has a novel with a female fighter pilot heroine, and has also begun a humorous crime solving series of a burned out nurse who becomes a medical fraud insurance investigator.

Lori loves the idea of romances having happy endings in which characters overcome great odds--often at great emotional prices. These books, she feels, in today's world can help women see that there is always that proverbial light at the end of the tunnel--or they can just be a great entertaining read. How to Sell Your eBooks by Giving Them Away

Dorothy Thompson

Years ago, my grandmother sat me down and told me I better make plans for the future now.  She said if you want to succeed in anything, you must look ahead.  “I want to be an author,” I told her.  She said, “Then, honey, you better grab the bull by the horns”.

I didn’t quite understand the concept until I began my journey selling my eBook.  Her words yelled out to me as I sat day and night scouring the web, trying to find the secrets to make my book a success.  Having a writing website wasn’t doing it, like I had read.  Submitting your link to your book in search engines wasn’t doing it.  Reviews weren’t doing it.  What I didn’t understand was the fact that this is what I was informed to do and still my books lie in cyber-space, unread.

I began to explore why people weren’t buying not only my eBook, but eBooks in general.  My publisher stated that this was happening everywhere.  What started out as the “wave of the future” has turned into a slow, but persistent, dribble.  People weren’t buying and I decided to take the bull by the horns; not only to find out why they weren’t buying, but what it would take to get them to do so.

Why buy an eBook?

A few years ago, Alan Kay, came up with an idea of putting a book on the web, thus crushing the print industry.  He touted we would save trees, there would be immediate accessibility, and make money to boot.  eBook publishers jumped on the bandwagon, setting up small e-publishing websites where authors could take advantage of what some predicted would be the "new wave" of publishing.

Jack Romanos, president of the Simon & Schuster division of Viacom, told a crowd of reporters, “We believe the eBook revolution will have an impact on the book industry as great as the paperback revolution of the 60’s.”

E-publishers offered handsome royalties, accepted unsolicited manuscripts, and gave new authors a chance for notoriety in an otherwise inaccessible market.  They knew that in order for this thing to work, they must come up with a way to get people to accept reading an eBook in the first place.  Thus, hand-held reading devices were born.

Curling up with a good…hand-held reading device?

However, hand-held reading devices such as the Palm Pilot, did not grab the money-conscious public as was predicted.  Many stated they were overpriced and would have to come down before they would plunk their hard-earned greenbacks for a device just to read books.  Many have stated they still loved to curl up with a nice book instead of a cold, hard machine.  Let’s back up to why these seemingly innovative devices are slow to catch on.

Years ago, there was radio.  The family sat glued to it as they listened to their favorite shows.  When television was introduced, it was beyond the means of these hard-working folk and took many years before it was accessible in the average household.  When the price came down and more people starting accepting it, the television soon began its journey inside practically every house.  And still many years later, two to three households owned more than one.

What did it take for television to catch on?  After all, these people, coming out of the Depression, could barely put food on the table, much less buy anything extravagant.  They had their radio to listen to the latest news broadcasts and Orson Well's declaring the end of the world.  Why would they want anything more?

The answer is easy.  Everyone is looking for a better way to do things.  After the depression and the economy picked up, Americans rebuilt their lives and the ‘Keeping up with the Jones’ syndrome erupted.  Everyone just had to have the latest gadget from televisions to the newest cars.  This will happen with eBooks in time.  When the general public become acquainted with eBooks, they will discover how they can purchase a book online and be reading it in a matter of minutes.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Many predictors of the fate of the eBook state people are just fine curling up with a good book.  Like they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Starling Lawrence, editor in chief of the publishing company, W.W.Norton & Company states, “If eBooks were the only thing to buy in a ‘bookstore’, I would buy a lot fewer books.  I am glad I will be dead by the time they take over the business.”

Many are predicting it will be eight to ten years before electronic publishing begins to equal paper.  What is an eBook author to do in the meantime?  Let their e-books sit?  While certainly not collecting dust, they are not collecting any profits either.

Conclusion

In order to sell our eBooks, many things must come into focus.  One, hand-held devices must come down in price much like the television did when it first appeared.  Second, you must have exposure.  Third, people must become accustomed to your writing before they are going to invest their hard-earned money.

People are penny pinchers by nature.  Why buy something when you can get if for free?  Go to any search engine and pull up free e-books and you’ll never consider buying an eBook again.

Several publishers noted that this trend is increasing.  People are at least becoming aware of e-books, slowly but surely.  Several publishers noted that the public does appear to be investigating electronic books.

But however low their current sales, several publishers noted that some people do appear to be investigating electronic books. They have flocked to the University of Virginia Library's Electronic Text Center (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/ebooklist.html), for example, which provides electronic editions of classic books free. Between last August and mid-June, users downloaded over three million copies of about 1,600 titles, from "Alice in Wonderland" to `Macbeth’.

The answer?

What an e-author must do to sell eBooks is give them away.  Yes, give them away.  One, it gives people a feel for reading in pdf or html format.  Two, it gives people a feel for the kind of writing you do.  Rusty Fischer, author of “Beyond the Bookstore”, uses this technique quite often.  An author of many eBooks, Rusty states that this is the most profitable promotional tool an unknown author can have to make his/her works fly off the computer.  He has had remarkable sales with this strategy.

There are two ways to do this:

1.When offering your book for sale, offer another related to your subject for free.  Use the adage, “Buy my book, get ‘1000 Ways to Make More Money’ for Free”.  Not only will the buyer receive your best-selling book, they get a bonus book for free.  Offer incentives.  They’ll snap your book up faster with this promotional selling strategy more than any other kind.

2.Offer a couple chapters of your book in a ‘mini-eBook’ that will give readers a glimpse of your writing talent.

I posted a survey at my writing site, The Writer’s Life, and asked what the biggest promotional method for selling eBooks was and the answer was word of mouth.  I send my books to people who express interest in them as a sort of courtesy.  They have told others how good it was, which resulted in more sales for me!

Experts tell us eBook sales will pick up eventually.  When the public realizes the advantage of buying an eBook, the eBook author will see profits.  Providing eBooks for free on the internet will actually help sell your hard copies as well.  In fact, this allows you to publish in both media simultaneously!  Meanwhile, try this approach and watch your eBook sales soar!

(1) BEHIND THE SCENES

On Becoming an Editor-in-Chief?

Interview with Elizabeth Burton, Editor-in-Chief of Zumaya Publications

eBe: Why did you get started as an editor?
Elizabeth: By default, actually. Dr. Bob Rich, who knew I was editing for several electronic publishing houses, referred me to Zumaya Publications. I began working for Tina (Haveman) and Diana (Kemp-Jones) in April of 2002. Shortly thereafter, Tina asked me for an opinion on a couple of submissions they'd received. Never being loath to voice an opinion, I accepted the job. Then, at the end of June, they asked me if I'd be interested in running their editorial department and handling acquisitions.

As this was the first time I'd been part of senior staff anywhere, I felt it behooved me to become as knowledgeable about the BUSINESS of publishing as I could. Although we consider Zumaya to be a print house, I've long been a fan of ebooks--they're my preferred reading format, actually--so one of the first things I helped with was getting our titles listed with Fictionwise. That was in September, I believe, and although we aren't going to give Stephen King or Danielle Steel a problem anytime soon, we're seeing a fair number of sales from there.

eBe: Do epublishers currently have a reputation for producing quality novels?
Elizabeth: Unfortunately, no. The quality of the editing is still very uneven--I see this as a reviewer. I've found glaring historical, grammatical, punctuation and spelling /usage errors; and this is particularly frustrating when the book is a first-rate piece of work.

That's not to say it's not getting better. It is. But as the major publishing houses -- the Big New York Guys -- begin to focus more attention on ebooks, the indies really need to work hard at making sure what they publish is as well-written and professionally produced as anything Random House can provide.

eBe: What will you do to earn a good reputation for your company?
Elizabeth: We've already done it. Our standards for acquisition are very, very high; and while we encourage promising writers as much as we can, we will not accept a manuscript that doesn't meet those standards. I try to help by providing a critique for those books that do have potential, and I've had writers come back with a revision that DOES meet our criteria. For me, that's where small presses and electronic publishers have the advantage--we can do what publishers used to do and nurture good writers.

We are also perfectionists when it comes to editing and copyediting. We screen editor candidates carefully and all without exception are required to take a stringent skills test. As a result, we have an exceptionally talented editorial staff.

In fact, our standard can sometimes be a little frustrating for our authors, because I try very hard to match them with just the right editor. That can mean they have to wait a bit longer than might otherwise be expected, but when the dust settles most of them tell us the end result was well worth the wait.

eBe: What changes, good or bad, have you recently seen in the epublishing industry?
Elizabeth: There is no question the market is expanding for ebooks, and that's the best news any of us could have. The convenience of being able to load a book or three onto your handheld and fill in spare time reading is making new fans
every day.

Still, I don't foresee ebooks making it into bookstores anytime soon, so the next goal is to get more recognition from booksellers for the other side of electronic publishing: print-on-demand. Here, too, publishers are battling the bias that says all POD books are poorly written, unedited, clumsily produced...much the same reputation ebooks started out with.

And, to be fair, that is too often deserved as well, and the POD vanity publishers like iUniverse haven't helped. The big culprit, though, is the present distribution system, which simply isn't adaptable to POD. However, that same system is constantly driving the cover prices of books up as all the middlemen demand deeper and deeper discounts. I believe that if we continue to educate the reading public to the advantages of both ebooks and POD, we'll succeed in changing the way books get into their hands.

eBe:  What do you have to offer that perhaps traditional (print) publishers do not?
Elizabeth: A close, personal relationship with authors. And a commitment to seeing them succeed--and not just because the senior staff happens to be Zumaya authors, too. If you listen to the complaints most often voiced by traditionally published new and midlist authors, it's that once the book is out of their hands it's beyond their control. Publicity support is minimal, if it exists at all, and if that book fails to pay back its costs they may never be able to sell a book to the BNYG's again.

Like many of the new small publishers, Zumaya lacks the revenue base just yet to do any really significant advertising, but we take advantage of every opportunity to place the house and its authors where the name can reach readers. I'm always on the alert for marketing opportunities, especially low-cost ones, which I then pass on to the authors.

It's become almost a cliché to say that a particular electronic/POD publisher is "like a family," but at the very least we're like a club, one where the goal is to provide good books to hungry readers.

eBe: What genres do you offer?
Elizabeth: At the present time we offer or are open to submissions in all fiction genres in adult, young adult and middle reader categories. In nonfiction, we particularly like self-help and true crime. Memoirs are welcome provided they have a universal theme. We also recently formalized our erotica imprint, eXtasy, as a separate part of the company and are actively seeking
submissions there.

eBe: What do you see as the future of ebooks?
Elizabeth: I firmly believe the market for ebooks will continue to grow, and that the small publishers will begin to see increases in sales as the reading public discovers they can get books as good as or better than the BNYG fare for a fraction of the cost.

However, I think that will only happen if effort is made to continue to educate those readers about the facts of electronic publishing, and to target marketing toward readers. Quite honestly, I see far too much marketing effort wasted on "preaching to the choir"--press releases sent to listservs and other places where authors convene.

The next generations have grown up with electronics. They're comfortable using them for things their predecessors still sometime struggle with. They see no difference between reading on a computer or PDA and reading a book--and they'll be the ones who bring ebooks up to the level of their print counterparts as a viable way to read.

Author info:

Elizabeth Burton knew she wanted to be a writer the soft summer night she scared the bejabbers out of her kid sister and some young friends with a ghost story she made up on the spot. It took a lot of years and some serious detours, but she has finally reached that much desired goal.

Transplanted from Pennsylvania to Austin, Texas,  Liz is a former journalist who so far has had three short stories published: "Somewhere in Her Smile," "Simple Sarah and Slippery Sam" (which was also a Writers of the Future finalist) and "Troll Call."  She reviews for, edits and publishes a monthly review of books, The Blue Iris Journal, and recently accepted the position as editor-in-chief and acquisitions editor for her publisher, Zumaya Publications.

Paranormal romance

5 Stars!

NOTES ON THE WINDOWSILL is a paranormal romance that will make you laugh, cry, and think about the many signs and signals around us that we don't always notice. The characters of the author's creation are real and vivid. The story centers around a young woman named Jordan, the main character, who has lost the love of her life, Martin. Through her days of mourning and trying to heal, she reminisces about their amazing relationship and surreal bond. The intensity of their love was on a higher level than normal relationships, each feeling they were meant to be together, soul mates even.

Jordan realizes her many dreams and visions had given her signs about the fateful night Martin died. Months later she still feels his presence and receives notes on the windowsill, a sweet gesture he began when they moved in together. She isn't sure whether she is going crazy or if her love is trying to tell her something. Through visits to her psychiatrist and a kind fortune-teller, she finds pieces that unravel many of the symbols she ignored. As Jordan tries to move on, she meets a new man who has many similarities to Martin and begins to fulfill a promise, a dream she was meant to fulfill.

Jennifer L. B. Leese paints a very sentimental story that draws you in and haunts you after finishing the story. You feel compassion and sympathy for the trials and tribulations the main character is forced to go through and you are right there with her. I highly recommend NOTES ON THE WINDOWSILL -- a touching love story. You may want to have the Kleenex box nearby as you read.

Title: Short quirky Tales by Lisa Tate
Author: Lisa Tate
Twilight Times Books

SF/F Collection

Reviewed by Celia A. Leaman, author, editor and reviewer

I read this collection of short stories with a smile on my face and a finger on the click button of my Pocket PC, eager to see where the author would take me next. Some stories were vignettes; others were longer. They are the sort of tales that jumpstart the imagination. Beautifully written, wickedly delicious at times: chilling, sensual.

A man has a chance to change the future of the world, yet he turns it down because of past conditioning. A Muslim woman finds herself questioning her traditional behavior when she's left in charge of a spaceship full of women and children. There is an interesting slant on a Biblical tale. A fascinating incident on a Greek island, involving Medusa. And strange things happen to a person when drinking an ancient wine.

A few stories are twists and turns on every day occurrences, too. Others reflect the concern many of us have about scientists gone mad with genetic engineering and gene therapy. Some are futuristic. But I can assure you, all are indeed quirky!

SHORT QUIRKY TALES is an inspired piece of work in which Ms Tate passes on her imagery with fluent ease. I read each story twice and enjoyed each one. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thought provoking experience.

Celia Leaman, whose web page is entitled www.devonshirebabe.com feels she is truly a child of Dartmoor, and the moors are a perfect setting for her imaginative, mystical and romantic stories. Her first book, Mary's Child is written around the Dartmoor legend of Jay's Grave, and she's working on two more books in the Dartmoor Series.

After she emigrated to Canada in 1980 she had short stories published in national and international magazines in the UK, Canada and the United States. She wrote and co-directed an English farce that was performed on Galiano Island, BC, where she lived for several years.

Her lifestyle seems to change every few years, and currently, she teaches information sessions on ebooks, copy-edits and reviews, is her own web-mistress, and when she isn't working at the local libraries, continues to write. If she has time for hobbies, she likes to garden, paint in oils and take meditative walks
